It was 1968 when a 17 year old Terry Kane first walked into East West Karate School on Nunes Avenue in Castro Valley. That began a journey that saw him earn his first Black Belt in 1971. He was then selected for the East West USA Team to compete in China in 1974. As head instructor for the East West Castro Valley school, Mr. Kane developed one of the most successful schools in the East West system. Mr. Kane became President of the East West company, representing 15 martial arts schools throughout the bay area. In 1984, Mr. Kane went out on his own, opening the first T. Kane's Karate School in Fremont. This lead to opening schools in Newark and San Jose. In December 2000, Mr. Kane returned to his roots, purchasing the karate school in Castro Valley where his career began 33 years earlier. Mr. Kane has two sons, Shaun and Jay, both Black Belts, who along with fellow Black Belts, Paul Holloway and Mike Smith, make up the head instructor team for the T. Kane's Karate Schools. On March 11, 2001, Mr. Kane held the "T. Kane's Invitational Martial Arts Championships" at the new Castro Valley school. Over 225 participants, ages 3 through 50, from martial arts schools as far away as Rohnert Park and Sacramento, competed in the tournament. Tournament winners from Castro Valley were: Katie Goodman - 1st place in Self Defense Techniques, Weapons and Tae Kwon Do Forms, and 2nd place in Kendo Katas. Dillon Plummer - 1st place in Self Defense Techniques. Zarien Smith - 2nd place in Self Defense Techniques. Tamera Williamson - 2nd place in Tae Kwon Do Forms
