Medrano Leads CV Athletes into the Meet of Champions

Several Castro Valley stars on track to compete in the Meet of Champions at UC Berkeley

Amanda Medrano posted the fastest time of the day in the girls 800-meter race at Diablo Valley College, leading numerous Castro Valley athletes into the NCS Meet of Champions (MOCS), taking place Saturday at UC Berkeley. Medrano, who started running the 800-meter only earlier this season, won her heat by 10 seconds. She posted a time of 2:14.78, only a second off the school record. She also helped the Castro Valley girls qualify in the 400-meter relay, posting the fourth best time of the day, 4:08.70. HAAL 200-meter champion Kevin Griego also advanced in the 200 meters, placing fourth in 22.53. Freshman Kelly Stewart raced to the seventh best time in the 300 low hurdles, 47.70.

In the pole vault, Erin McCarthy and Nick Simmons both qualified for the MOCS. Both vaulters also equaled their personal bests. Simmons placed fourth in a height of 12 feet, 6 inches, while McCarthy took second overall with a vault of 10 feet, 6 inches.

In the team competition, the St. Mary's boys' team placed first, with Castro Valley taking seventh. And the girls' competition was won by the Lady Colts of James Logan, with Castro Valley also placing seventh in this competition.
