Skyline Lacrosse raises the barTeam Does Well in Orange County TourneyBy: Piedmont PostApril 24, 2001Traveling in the early hours Saturday morning, 21 players from the Skyline Lacrosse Club team flew to Orange County to face an array of opponents from Southern California. They more than rose to the occasion, achieving a new level of skill and confidence. Playing the early part of their first game in a driving rainstorm, Skyline's JV outlasted the Laguna varsity 3-2. Henry Bowling scored the first two goals, and Chris Neumann fired in the game winner. Goalie Eric Brown kept a clean net, with relief work from Paul van Stratuum. At midday, the young Skyline players were pitted against Torrey Pines II, a team that arrived with matching helmets, four coaches and more than 50 on its roster. After giving up four goals to Torrey in the first half, Skyline's defense completely shut down the Torrey Pines sticks with some outstanding work by Bo Ghirardelli and Drew Reid. Attackman Ollie Miller scored first for Skyline with an amazing shot off an assist from Sean Higuera. Midfielders Mike Kim and Charlie Habegger added solo goals to pull Skyline with one goal in the 4-3 loss. "Your team really has incredible heart," said Lick Wilmerding varsity coordinator Jack Pierce. The final game of the tournament was with Southern Marin, a team Skyline beat 9-5 the week before at Seminary Field at Strawberry Point in Marin County. This time there was no doubt, as the lads from Skyline dominated all across the field and came away with an 11-0 victory. Seven individual players scored goals: Amatai Cohen, Jim Johnson, Miller, Jordan Pervere, Teddy McWilliams, Tim Richardson and Peter Phillips. The defense, led by David Moretti, achieved a remarkable milestone: no penalties were rung up against the defenders or the midfielders.
