O'Dowd Edges Trojans for HAAL Championship

Following a second loss to Bishop O'Dowd, CV coach Shari Cabral hopes the Trojans may go to NCS

By: Alexandra Krasov

The girls Varsity volleyball team, after just finishing its season, lost their chance for a tie for first place with Bishop O’Dowd for the HAAL championship. The CVHS overall record presently stands at 21-5. Team spirits remained high following a 3-2 victory over rival school, Moreau Catholic.

Game one of the second match against Moreau on Oct. 24 ended with a CV win of 15-12.

Castro Valley started game two with a three-point lead and continued to lead until the end, when the Moreau Mariners came back to win 16-18.

The Trojans again took the early lead in game three and won it with a score of 15-7.

With the Trojans leading the match 2-1, the Mariners needed a game four win to stay in the match. They began that game strong with a five-point lead but then allowed Castro Valley to comeback 8-6. The lead went back and forth for both teams and ended with a decisive win for Moreau, 10-15.

The match-deciding game five fell under rally rules, where every point counts, and ended in favor of the Castro Valley team at 15-7.

"Both teams played hard with very good defense," said Moreau coach Brian Aguirre. "I didn’t see holes in any plays and I think we played very well."

On Nov. 17 head coach Shari Cabral intends to bid for a spot in NCS. Cabral remains confident that they will be able to compete in NCS.

"I’m not happy with how we played," said Cabral, referring to their second lost to O’dowd. "They’re a good team. They played clean volleyball." "If we play to the best of our abilities, then we can beat anyone," said senior Mary Davis. "We’ve really come together this year. We have a strong record, so we should get the bid for NCS."
