Arroyo finished their great season on a good note as they beat a potential playoff opponent in Moreau Catholic on Friday, February 1. Arroyo held a 3-0 lead and never let go as they used a their tough defense to keep Moreau Catholic from denting their advantage. “They played great, they took advantage of their lucky breaks and it turned out well for them,” explained Moreau Catholic’s Coach Palacio. Moreau Catholic went down early as they were called on a penalty in
the box, which led to a penalty kick. The shot, by Arroyo’s Leah
Vouves, deflected off Moreau Catholic’s touted goalie Nicki Rombough, and
found its way in off the post. Arroyo would never give up the lead after
that with a tough defense that was relentless in keeping the Moreau forwards
in check. “We mainly focused on the strikers,” the Arroyo coach added after
the game.
Arroyo scored their second goal off great passing in the Moreau zone
and a point blank shot by Kate Chadwick that went pass the diving Rombough.
Just a few minutes after the second goal, Arroyo gave Moreau the back breaker.
Sarah Chadwick scored Arroyo’s third goal from just over the goalie box,
nearly forty feet away. The shot amazingly sailed just under the crossbar
and it ended any chance for a Moreau comeback.
The second half saw a few Moreau chances, but the ball mainly stayed
in Moreau Catholic’s zone and the Arroyo defense would not let up. Arroyo
and Moreau Catholic are both moving on to the HAAL playoffs in which Arroyo
will face Castro Valley High while Moreau faces top seeded Bishop O’Dowd.
This game could have been a preview of what is to come in the playoffs.
Both these teams have to face tough opponents and that was their main focus
after the whistle blew to end the game.
