On August 11-12th, Mustang Soccer League in Danville hosted the Mustang Stampede Jamboree, one of the first of the 2001 season for class I girls and boys teams.

Mustang Soccer League, founded in 1972, is one of the largest youth leagues in northern California, with nearly 6,000 children participating. Class I is the highest level of play in the under 10 age bracket in the California Youth Soccer Association. Jamborees, unlike tournaments, do not keep standings or scores, and do not award trophies or medals for under 10 players or teams.

Under 10 teams are allowed to participate in only one tournament per season.

The Mustang Spirit girls under 10 team remains undefeated after their first two jamborees. Their record is currently 6-0-2. Both ties have been against the San Ramon Shock. Spirit battled back from a two goal deficit at half time to settle for a tie with the Shock in this jamboree. The Mustang Spirit finished last season as the District III champions in their age group. District III is Pleasanton, Fremont, Livermore, Dublin, San Ramon and Mustang (Danville-Alamo). District III is considered by many to be the strongest in northern California because about 25% of the players in the State Premier League are from District III. (highest level of club teams)

On Sunday morning the Mustang Spirt played against the Fremont Alliance. The final score was 7-0. Spirit had 27 shots on the Fremont goal with 5 different girls scoring the goals. Overall the Spirit scored 17 goals during their jamboree. The Spirit defense only allowed 2 goals. 6 different players shared goalkeeping duties in the four games.

Pig-tailed Coki Wuest, the littlest Spirit, was awarded "Top Dog" status by her coaches, for her dominating play in the last three games. Showing amazing dribbling skills for her age, she dazzled onlookers by going around much larger defenders and scoring 3 goals and assisting in two others. During the last game, the other team could be heard yelling, "Oh, no, not Coki!"

The Top Dog excites the team and creates a passion for winning the ball at every chance and demonstrates the true "SPIRIT" of soccer. Her teammates play better because of her drive to succeed. The Mustang Spirit will be at the Shamrock Jamboree in Dublin next weekend. In October they will be going to Santa Rosa for their one permissible tournament this season. They anticipate repeating as District Champions this season.
